Additional information
The Winter Garden Theatre was first leased to the Shubert Organization in 1911, and is their longest held venue on Broadway. It was originally built in 1896 as the American Horse Exchange, and has also been used as a movie theater with Warner Brothers between 1928 and 1933.
The venue was first adapted from the Horse Exchange into a theater by William Albert Swasey. It has since been updated by Herbert J. Krapp, who lowered the proscenium arch and removed the runway, and Francesca Russo, who restored it to an lelegant 1920s design in 2001. The Winter Garden Theatre has a unique, wide auditorium split across the Orchestra and Mezzanine levels, and a capacity of 1,526.
Many notable Broadway shows have opened or run at the Winter Garden Theatre, including Barbara Streisand's breakout performance in Funny Girl (1964). Its longest running show is Cats, which was at the Winter Garden between 1982 and 2000.
