History

Moving podiums - carros, were used in Spain. These wagons were consequently changed into one fixed stage, sometimes even in larger numbers if it involved a more narrative play. The classic European stage, however, was the town square supplemented with a podium or a graded auditorium, as the spaces of old amphitheatres were used. Average spectators would usually watch the performance while standing or would pay for a better view from the window of a neighbouring burgher home. At a later point the number of wagons used in performances increased up to eight. The fixed stage began to be used with the wagons parked on the sides and in back. Carros served the function of dressing rooms for the actors while at the same time serving as the entrance portals onto the stage.
