History

Ledoux designed two other theatres, neither of which was built. That for La Guimard (1772) was small in scale, a rising amphitheatre plan ending in a semi-circle of columns. That for Marseilles was extremely ambitious, and was conceived as part of a major town-planning operation. It was to be free-standing on all sides, with shops on the ground floor behind colonnades. In front, a portico without pediment supported a quadriga. This led into a columned vestibule, from which one either descended to the cafe or1 ascended to the level of the salle.
