History

In September 1945 the pupils of Dugonics András School in Szeged decided to start a puppet theatre. With the support of the Free Culture Board they found a home for it first in the Piarist School, then in the Dugonics School. In the autumn of 1948 the Teachers' Trade Union took over its direction. At that time only Béla Kövér remained of the founding members, as a technical assistant. After sundry moves the Kamara Puppet Theatre opened in Dózsa György utca in October 1954 with Dezső Szilágyi's play for puppets Mackó Mukik. In 1964 the company was known as the Szeged Puppet Theatre. In May 1984 it had to leave the building as the roof had to be renewed, and found a temporary home in the main hall of the Bartók Béla Cultural Centre. The puppet theatre's new building at 50 Lenin körút (now Tisza Lajos körút) opened on 25 October 1987. The architectural plans were the work of Tibor Bakonyi, the interior design that of Mihály Szekeres. In 1993 the Szeged Country and Municipal Assembly set up the independent Szeged Puppet Theatre, which in 1996 took the name of its founder Dr. Béla Kövér, who had died in 1994. Puppet theatre training began in January 1996, when the puppet-making studio also was opened. The 50-seater Kamara Hall was inaugurated in June 2009.
