Designed and built in 1871-1875 by Ferdinand Fellner. Opened with the Hungarian drama "Nöuralom", and 25 September 1875 with Meyerbeer's opera "Robert le Diable" (in German).

After the second fire, only the lateral sides of the building remained undamaged. The reconstruction was done following the plans of the architect Duiliu Marcu who rebuilt the façade and the theatre hall in the Neo-Byzantine style, which was representative of Romanian Architecture at the time.

The phenomenon of the architects Fellner and Helmer would be difficult to capture with only one building. Their work consisted of continual, although somewhat stereotypical, work in terms of style. They placed a great emphasis on achieving the technical-operational needs of theatre buildings.
