Architectural description

Shortly after the turn of the century, they started to build a people’s theater for the miners in Tatabánya. The existing building is a one-storey high building with middle projection. The middle projection is articulated with four opening axes, in front the ground floor facade is a one-storey mass, which is a terrace on the first floor. The wings are articulated with three opening axes, on the first floor the openings are circular ended, while on the ground floor thy are square ended.

On the middle axle of the wings facades an arched gable is closing the facade and a closing edge is running around the middle projection. In the width of the middle projection’s three axis a tympanum is closing the facade, whereas a closing edge and a baluster run around. Under the theatre from the abutment open the service functions.

A modern new building is connected to the existing theater at the backside. This new building’s facade is divided by thin vertical openings. The building is a multi-functional theatre. The theatrical spaces were designed to serve the flyloft, sinking stage, separate studio stage, mobile auditorium and the mobile orchestra.

The stage is much closer to the audience and the workshops are located inside the theatre. Above the existing building’s orchestra pit there is a barrel-vault. The auditorium has 415 seating capacity, with inserting also the orchestra. Below the auditorium is located a hydraulic system which is moving the rows of seats and a flat floor auditorium can be constructed.

History

A start was made on building the miners' culture house, the People's House, in Tatabánya in 1913. It was built by the Hungarian General Coal Company, under the provisions of the mining law then in force, and was opened in 1917.
In 1964 a ballet hall was added to the building. The life of the theatre was based on the Bányász Színpad (Miners' Stage), formed in 1964, which acquired a nation-wide reputation. It was an amateur company, directed by Dr. Béla Éless, and led from 1973 on by Tibor László.

The People's House was renovated in 1979 and reopened in August that year as a receiving house. At the time the director was László Gengeliczky. In the new wing of the building there were a studio theatre seating 120, a chamber music hall and a lounge. The theatre (seating capacity 500), the corridors and foyer were given a fresh charm. In the renovated building 'the two chamber-rooms have a joint technical area, and lighting, sound, temperature and ventilation can be automatically regulated and programmed. The Austrian firm PANI was responsible for the technical installations.' Programmes consisted mainly of visiting theatrical companies, film shows and workers’ theatre meetings. Performances by the Orpheus Theatre (from the 1980–81 season) and the Miners' Stage were given in the Chamber Theatre. The building also contained a library and an exhibition hall. At that time the Tatabánya Coalmines were responsible for the upkeep of the People's House.

In 1986 the Komárom County Theatre was formed, which had no resident company, and on 1 October 1989 moved into the People's House. It continued to function as the People's House Theatre as an official theatre with state support. Dr. Béla Éless was its manager and artistic director from 1 October 1989 until 31 December 1995.

From 1 January 1994 the People's House worked under the name of Jászai Mari Theatre, and from 1997 Jászai Mari Theatre and People's House.

Although it was unable to maintain a permanent company, a virtual company of quality artists connected to directors that worked regularly at the Jászai Mari Theatre came into being, as actors returned again and again for new productions.

The repertoire of the theatre covers the classical playwrights – Shakepeare, Goldoni and Brecht – and at the same time attaches particular importance to contemporary drama, foreign and Hungarian alike. Two of the most popular and best known theatrical writers of the new millennium – Péter Kárpáti and István Tasnádi – are considered in-house writers at Tatabánya.

Since 1996 the theatre has subsisted on assistance from the town and the county council and on state support for official theatres. Zoltán Zubornyák was director of the theatre from 1 February 1996 to 31 December 2000.

On 24 February 2000 a life-size bronze statue of Mari Jászai, work of the sculptor György Szabó, was unveiled in the foyer of the theatre.

Since 1 January 2000 László Harsányi Sulyom has been directorof the theatre. In 2003 it was extended to the design of Károly Tóth and László Lakatos. The auditorium now seats 496, the proscenium arch is 9.4 m wide, and the Chamber hall seats 120.

In 2007 the town engaged Magyar Építő Zrt. (Hungarian Building) for reconstruction work, during which the company performed in the Culture House.

The technical handing over of the renovated Jászai Mari Theatre began on 13 January 2009. The complete refurbishment of the theatre cost 3.5 billion forints, which was covered by 1.6 billion of state support and a further 1.7 billion from the town.

The single greatest task was the subsequent foundation of the building. The missing foundations were forced under the building by the use of so-called injection technique, never before used in Hungary. The floor area of the new theatre and extensions is almost three times that of the original. In the course of the renovation the original facade of the building was restored.

The Tatabánya Municipal Library, which was opened on National Central Mining Day, 4 September 2011, also works in the building.

The renovated Jászai Mari Theatre, People's House, opened on 24 September 2009 with Berthold Brecht's Chalk Circle, produced by Eszter Novák.
