Designed and built in 1871-1875 by Ferdinand Fellner. Opened with the Hungarian drama "Nöuralom", and 25 September 1875 with Meyerbeer's opera "Robert le Diable" (in German).

Built in 1881-1882 by Ferdinand Fellner & Hermann Helmer. Opened with a Hungarian performance, and 15 December 1882 with Moser's "Krieg und Frieden".

After the second fire, only the lateral sides of the building remained undamaged. The reconstruction was done following the plans of the architect Duiliu Marcu who rebuilt the façade and the theatre hall in the Neo-Byzantine style, which was representative of Romanian Architecture at the time.
