History

This well-preserved theatre in Orange has part of the auditorium carved into the slope while part is constructed on an open area. The stage was decorated with statues, niches and a portico. The space of the stage was increased up to the level with the final rows in the auditorium in the case of Roman theatres. The view of the spectators was thus limited to the space of the theatre, rejecting the Greek view of theatre as being open to the landscape, evoking a sense of unity with the wider outside world.
