History

The Cellar Theatre behind the Presbyterian Church at Kálvin Square found space in Török Pál Street 3 in the cellar of a block of flats. The theatre is one of the popular cultural institutions of the Ferencváros Community Centre.

The building hosting the Cellar Theatre was built in three-story apartment block at the corner of Ráday and Török Pál Streets in an Eclectic style. The ground floor and first floor are horizontally rusticated and divided with edges. The top two levels have plastered surfaces. A projecting edge runs around the building.

The theatre works in the block of flat’s cellar, under barrel-vaulted ceiling made from bricks. We can enter the foyer-bar from the street level a few stair steps higher. This space can be opened with the place of club operating downstairs. Here the Benkó Dixieland Band performs weekly, earlier it was was known as Benkó Club. The ticket office is located on the same level together with the management offices.

The form of the theatre is axial and linear confronted auditorium. The appropriate increase of the audience assures good visibility and acoustics. Behind the auditorium the control room and scenery storage can be found opening to the street. The elements of the set are transported over the audience, and then stored in the side stage or at warehouse.

The flyloft over the stage assures proper height for the machinery systems which were reached from the opening of ground floor and the basement.
The dressing rooms open from the wing stage. Separately, a four-person male and female and a one-person dressing room was formed for the theatre which plays shows with few actors.
