(detail)Hermann Helmer |main architect
The phenomenon of the architects Fellner and Helmer would be difficult to capture with only one building. Their work consisted of continual, although somewhat stereotypical, work in terms of style. They placed a great emphasis on achieving the technical-operational needs of theatre buildings. They created a large number of theatres (mainly national theatres) in Central Europe - Austria, Croatia, Romania, the Czech Republic, etc.More theatres

History

The Olga Kobylianska Ukrainian Regional Music and Drama Theatre in Chernivtsi is an architecture masterpiece of the beginning of the XX century. It was built between 1904 and 1905, based on the designs of the famous Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer. The theatre facade stands out with its front door arch, realized in the Viennese baroque style. The main entrance is decorated with sculptural structures inspired by Greek mythology, made by the Viennese artist Ernst Hegenbarth.

The niches along the lateral facades hold the busts of Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and Haydn. The busts of Shevchenko and Pushkin were added later on. The unique architectural hall ornaments are realized in baroque style, in white and gold, in harmony with the cherry-coloured draperies, the chandelier and the walls lamps made from Bohemian glass.
