History

This large festival theatre in Salzburg came about through the remodelling of the royal Baroque stables. Due to insufficient space, part of the Mönchsberg Mountain had to be dug out (55,000 m? of pudding stone) so as to provide space for the huge facility of theatre and the rear stage. The large festival theatre ranks among the largest opera houses in the world in terms of the width of the hall (100 m).
