historia

Considered to be the oldest theatre in the South America, the Vila Rica Opera House / Casa da Ópera de Vila Rica (its former name) was built by Colonel João de Souza Lisbon in the Brazilian architectural tradition (Portuguese- Brazilian). The location gives no emphasis on the building in relation to the surrounding buildings. The façade of the building is very simple, retaining the austerity of civil architecture of that time.

The interior of the building is small and consists of four orders of galleries, encased by wooden guardrail. The theatre was originally lit by candles. Throughout its history, it has undergone numerous alterations, the most significant being in 1882, when the structure of the four orders of gallery has changed, acquiring a horseshoe shape and getting the floor of the auditorium downhill. The changes sought to adapt it at 19th century comfort requirements by introducing features of eclecticism.
