History

The central building of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics was built between1902-1909 to the design by Alajos Hauszmann. The assembly hall on the river side facade was heavily damaged in World War II, and during the reconstruction the height was divided by a ceiling. Up to that time the well-proportionate space was shared; and the Szkéné Theatre moved in the upper storey.

The theatre, suitable for independent theatre performances, was reconstructed by the plan of student of architecture László Vidolovics in 1968. This layout can be seen today also.

The theatre opens from the central corridor of the second floor; from where we step in the foyer, where the buffet and the café are is situated. The theatre opens enters from the entrance hall, which is of 14 x11 metres. It can be separated from the auditorium with circular curtain. The auditorium can be arranged flexibly. The three, river-view arched windows’ upper one third part belongs to the theatre. These are carefully curtained in order to provide tranquillity to the performances.
