History

Žilina-Záriečie railway station, still operational today, was built in 1946 and converted into an arts centre in 2003–2007. The new S2 theatre building under the Rondel flyover next to the station was built in 2009.

Since 2003 Stanica has operated as a combination of an independent arts centre, an art laboratory and an activists’ collective. In the map of the present it is a node for critical thought, work and education. Stanica has continued to narrate the story of a small station where city dwellers have always crossed paths with travellers from far away. As well as presenting and producing contemporary art, Stanica is also a community centre, a school, a park and a waiting room for passengers. In 2009 the new S2 theatre building was added to Stanica, built under a flyover out of beer crates and bales of hay.
