History

Underwent reconstruction work over a period of several centuries. All of the oldest, preserved classical plays were first performed here. It is located directly on the slope under the Acropolis the steepness of which creates an impression of divine unattainability. The actual slope was made use of as an auditorium prior to the construction of a wooden theatron which consequently collapsed with the spectators in it. For this reason a stone auditorium came into being at a later point. The audience members viewed the performances while standing.
