History

Original name: Deutsche Staatsoper Dekorations Werkstätten

Original purpose: productionworkshopsfor the State Theatre (in former GDR)

Date of construction: after 1947

Style: post-war industrial architecture

Current use: discussions were going on in 2005 envisaging utilization of the building for the needs of the Berlin film and theatre Academy

The house of the former GDR’s State Theatre production workshops was built after 1947 and is located in Chauseestrasse 28 in close proximity to what used to be the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall, nowadays the centre of the unified city. It had served its purpose up until 2007, the year when centralized production workshops (Der Bühnenservice Berlin) were established whereas the abandoned building in an attractive part of the city was considered fit for use by the film and theatre academy. The building is an extensive ferroconcrete construction with windows. The entire upper floor is dedicated to two large-space paint shops with shed lighting in the steel structure of the roof. One of the paint shops has a footbridge right below the ceiling from which horizons can be viewed from a distance. The building was home to carpenter shops, locksmith shops, upholstery and thermoforming workshops, paint shops and assembly halls with ceilings three floors high. The longitudinal side-facade has a removable window of considerable height making it possible to move oversize decorations from the assembly hall right onto trucks. The building can be approached by the main gate at the rear. The approach gate and the rear facade bear the inscription “Deutsche Staatsoper Dekorations Werkstätten “.
