THEATRE CITY — Alen Hausmeister, Mina Hiršman, Aleš Kacin, Jana Kocjan, Katja Ložar — University of Ljubljana, Faculty of architecture (SI) 1st Prize for THEATER CITY — for modest and sensitive design of “theatrical urban landscape”, where the theatre has a chance to develop not only in diversified existing or new buildings, but also with equal intensity in real urban city stage design.

Radovan Lipus

If it was not for a national theatre I would choose this solution, where the new urban space is being created, which offers new unexpected staging opportunities. Houses of various professions are in symbolical touch and by that they create small tweezers. On the other hand the question arises whether it is not creation of a theatrical ghetto. Normally, naturally grown city is an equal staging opportunity from time to time. Authors deliberately resigned for the expression of the theatre as a national symbol. So I am a fan, but not without reservations.

David Vávra

In this project I can see how both the program and the site were used as generators for transformation; the site was researched as a particular opportunity for a different regard on theatre, while the program was a generator for rethinking and reframing the unique site on both urban and architectural level. In this project, almost uniquely, the urban block which defines the site did not remain a grey shadow, “theatre” was not expressed an implant of a a plan and section of the traditional auditorium and a stage, and the result was not an object. It is an example of a creative and rather mature investigation to both cultural and physical aspects of architecture.

Alen Hausmeister, Mina Hirsman, Ales Kacin, Jana Kocjan, Katja Lozar (SI). This project deserves recognition for its extremely sensitive approach to the site; for the idea of making the block permeable with promenades going from east to west and from north to south; for the wonderful idea of naming houses after the users; for trying to evocate the existing chaos of the courtyard; and for the quality of the design process as a whole.

The aim of the project is to promote the still existing historic theatres in Europe by way of a new cultural tourism route, a free online database, and a travelling exhibition, also fostering cross-border cooperation among these theatres.
