Vojteh Ravnikar has died
Some of the more visible Ravnikar’s architectural works are: the post-office and store building in Vremenski Britof (1978), the municipal building in Sežana (1979), the Sežana-based Cultural centre Srečko Kosovel (1981) and the Drama Theatre of the Littoral region (1994), as well as the library of France Bevk in Nova Gorica (2000).
The basic credo of Ravnikar’s architecture is chosing concrete space as a starting point. "The beginnings of my professional career took place in the Karst region, probably the most architecturally explicit and extraordinary landscape. The characteristic element of the Karst architecture is the wall, but it is also marked by a special manner of design and interweaving of spaces. Namely, in the Karst, there is usually a half-public half-private space in front of the house, called ‘borjač’, and surely enough, this passage from nature, from the outdoors to the inner or private space, has penetrated me," he said seven years ago, when he was bestowed the Prešeren Award for his architectural opus. For his work, Ravnikar received several other merits, among others the Herder Award in 2006.
Ravnikar was born in Ljubljana in 1943. He got his BA at the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture and construction. From 1977 to 1980, he was part of the KARST Group, worked as an editor at the magazine AB – Architect’s Bulletin. From 1983, he was head of the organisation committee of the annual Piran Architectural Days. In 1992, he founded the magazine Piranesi and became its editor-in-chief. From 1993 onwards, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana.
