Several La Fenice theatre workshops are located on the Giudecca island in “halls inside halls” of an industrial complex that also hosts galleries, film studios as well as the old but still operating Fortuna textile factory. The factory was opened in 1921 on plots of land formerly belonging to a monastery. Nowadays it utilizes some parts of the complex as showrooms whereas others serve as theatre workshops. The buildings represent a fine example of brickwork with soffit bricks facades and wooden trusses. The paint shop is illuminated by light coming in through the facade windows whilst the carpenter shop is illuminated by skylights. In addition, there is a smallish blacksmith shop at the outer side that runs along one of Venice’s canals. The buildings that constitute the industrial complex were built with passageways connecting the inner parts with the canal, thanks to which the painted sceneries can be transported by boat to the theatresituated in another location. To make this possible, the façade has a pulley attached to it. La Fenice theatre intends to further expand its presence on the island by launching additional facilities in these quarters such as a costume production shop (the existing one being located in the area of Malibran) or a costume depot (currently residing in the Marghera military fortress). Towering over a lagoon southward of Venice, the Marghera fortress was abandoned by the military in the 1990s and should start serving as a cultural venue dedicated to promotion of creativity – suitably named “The Citadel of Creativity”. Buildings # 29, 30, 32 are to be made available to the La Fenice Venezia theatre, buildings # 35 and 36 to the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, etc. The arts school and the theatre workshops should be the catalysts in the process of bringing the Marghera fortress to new life.
