History

Original purpose: National Theatre production building in Prague

Address: Ostrovní – Divadelní, Praha 1

Author: Vladimír Wallenfels

Date of construction: 1934

Style: functionalism

Demolition: 1977, as part of New Scene construction

The original functionalistic National Theatre production building designed by architect Vladimír Wallenfels, a disciple of Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár, gave way to construction of the New Scene and administrative offices designed by architects Karel Prager and Pavel Kupka, as did Choura’s houses on Národní třída street. The building had a reinforced concrete skeleton and plastered facade with ribbon windows, an entrance hall with high, glass window displays, and top tier retreated backwards to make space for terraces. The stairway space was separated from the main building facade both in terms of colour and windows location. The demolition was documented by Petr Nikolaev, a student of documentary filmmaking at the neighbouring Film Academy (FAMU) as part of his student paper.
